As we planned the Stanleys’ family session, Britani let me know that they were throwing a surprise birthday party for Joseph and Jeffrey’s grandma, Doris, the morning of our shoot. I immediately asked if I could sneak over afterward and take pictures of her reaction. I’ve adored Doris since our first meeting when she was super skeptical of me and my choice of location. As far as she was concerned, professional photos were to be taken indoors. It’s been a huge feeling of accomplishment to have gained her (albeit slight) approval.

And what a wonderful surprise it was! She snuck into the room before half the guests even realized she was there. The look on her face was priceless. Happy 90 years, Doris!
